'Bodkin' Episode 1 Recap and Explained

Bodkin Series Review: Netflix presents “Bodkin” a mystery thriller with a comedy way of narrative in seven episodes. The story revolves around Bodkin a place in Ireland. Gilbert a podcaster got to Bodkin with two journalists Emmy and Dove to make a new podcast that deals with a missing case that happened years ago on the day of the Samhain festival.

Three persons disappeared that day. Now as these three went to solving the puzzle they started to solve more mysteries and connect the dots. The series is a mystery investigation portrayed in a dark humour narration.

The series has seven episodes with nearly 50 minutes of runtime per episode which was released on Netflix on 9th of May, 2024. The series is a mystery thriller so the team used a dark tone throughout the series. But the visuals are stunning as the location is Ireland, and the scenic beauty is excellent and well captured by the cinematographer. Each shot was very good. We can see the beauty of Ireland through the camera.

The setting of the scenes was also good. There are many old historical places shown in the series. There are only minimal casts in the series. The main lead cast is Gilbert played by Will Forte, Dove played by Siobhán Cullen, Emmy played by Robyn Cara and Seamus Gallagher, played by David Wilmot.

The series is created by Jez Scharf who is a writer and producer. He is known for his works in The UnDream (2013) and Groucho Nietzsche (2014). The creator approached a humorous way to tell the story in this series. Even though the story is a mysterious plot, they are portrayed as simple and fun at times in the middle.

The series started slowly and later got up with the pace. Each character is different in the team. The creator made his preparation to show the three people from the podcast team in a different way. While Dove’s character is brave and curious on finding the truth with an issue behind at her place, the Gilbert character is more of a soft guy who goes by the law, Emmy is normal and ambitious.

As the story happens in Ireland we can see many old historical places where the scenes were shot. The music department was not that bad maybe because the series goes in a normal way. From the start, the series was very simple, but when it came near to end the series became more complex and confusing.

Too much to think about and understand in the plot. The viewers may get confused about what happened there as there lot of modifications in the story at each time when they find new leads. But the creator tried his best to make it enjoyable and watchable. The dull scenes were there at the starting episodes but it was not much in later episodes.

We have seen many mystery thriller series before. Even Netflix used to release every month. But based on Ireland was very less. Not seen much of a thriller series that happened in Ireland. This is an addition to a thriller genre that happens in Ireland. It’s a slow burner but clicks later. The visuals are good and the story is also interesting to watch.

If you want to watch a series with a good story and some confusing mystery thrilling plot with a mixture of dark comedies, this will be the right choice. I personally liked the series as a good watch. Not saying excellent or exceptional but it was a good watch. Do give a try if you like these kind of plots.

I rate 3 out of 5 for this mystery thriller drama series.
