Gangs of Galicia Review: A new web series streaming on Netflix which is based on true events in a city of Spain is gaining good popularity and the audience has shown it great support by making it one of the highest-grossing shows in the Spanish Film Industry. After the great performance of Spanish shows like Money Heist, The Boarding School, Berlin and Elite, Gangs of Galicia is on its way to becoming the next in the charts.
Episode 1 of Gangs of Galicia starts with Ana Soriano, the lead protagonist, performed by Clara Lago, who is an attorney in Madrid, moving out of the courthouse after winning a case when she receives a call from her father. The conversation shared between them shows they are very close to each other and hold a strong father-daughter bond.
Her father, Silva, operates a luxurious boat in Spain to transport tourists and make a living out of it. Suddenly in the next scene, she gets the news of her father being shot on his own boat by some mysterious guy. 3 months later, she hears her father’s will which has two women’s names with a sum of money about whom, Ana and her mother are completely unaware.
Ana gets a feeling that her father might have a second life in Galicia, a town in Cambados, Spain where the two women resided. She leaves her settled career in Madrid where she was working in a top law firm and heads towards Cambados, a completely new place to her, to find the back story of her father’s death.
Upon, digging further into it, she realizes that her father had a second life here in Galicia where he was married to another woman and had a daughter, but that’s not it. He was also linked with the drug cartel there and the moment Ana arrives in Cambados, her presence gets noticed by the head of the drug cartel, Daniel, performed by Tomar Novas, who was taking care of the entire family business after her father got caught by the police.
Daniel was having a trial for a traffic violation when he saw Ana outside the courtroom and immediately fell for her unaware of her past and her father. As they get along, Ana discovers many secrets hidden within the Padin family and decides to collect evidence that can make them rot in jail and pay for her father’s death. In the process, she starts getting attached to the love and care Daniel showed to her and confronts her feelings with him.
This show has an unpredictable plot because whenever we expect the generic stuff to happen in the next scene, some unexpected comes up. It’s intriguing to watch, how a young female attorney moves to a new city in search of her father’s killer and falls in love with the guy linked to it who also happens to be the leader of the drug cartel there. Even at the end of season 1, I expected to have closure with Daniel’s confession but his statement left Ana as well as the audience unsatisfied about the reason behind Ana’s father’s murder.
Moreover, he is so in love with Ana that he is ready to leave his luxurious life behind and start a new beginning with her away from his place. Also, he gets convinced to steal his father’s secret documents which can provide immunity to him and Ana while heading out of the drug cartel.
I feel, there is a lot to cover about his father’s way of taking revenge with them and about discovering the killer and the real reason behind killing Ana’s father in his own boat. Based on the recent update, till date, there is no confirmation about the renewal of season 2 of Gangs of Galicia but a media interaction with the lead protagonist, Clara Lago, might be a hint that there is more to come under the name of Gangs of Galicia.
