His decision to fight in the battle of Rook’s Rest can be made because of two reasons, one is the strategic need to hold and not let them capture Rook’s Rest and it was also fuelled by his desire to cement his claim to the throne.

The Battle of Rook’s Rest

This battle, which we finally witnessed in episode 4 marks a crucial turning in the story. As Rook’s Rest is an important hold, it becomes the battleground for the soldiers as well as for the dragons of Rhaenyra Targaryen, Aegon II and Aemond. Rhaenyra got convinced to not to go herself but to send Rhaenys with her dragon, Meleys, to defend the castle.
