The 1st episode of Volume 4 delves into the intriguing case of Jack the Ripper who has a mysterious case involved with crime and horrifying murder in the Whitechapel district of London in 1888.

He mainly targeted women roaming at night, especially sex workers who prefer to meet in witty places making it easier for him to execute his horror killings. His killing styles created panic news in the districts and officials were searching all around for him.
Robert M. Wise has directed this episode and Richard Jones is the author and tour guide who explains the entire case in an elegant manner captivating the audience throughout the story.

Jack The Ripper Timeline

The first victim who Jack killed was Mary Ann Polly Nichols nicknamed Polly. She was 43 years old when she was murdered on 3rd August 1888. She was an alcoholic and to pay her bills for a living, she used to do sex work. That night she went out to attract some gentleman to arrange money for her bed for the night when she met Jack.

This was the time when the district was surrounded by poor people struggling to raise a loaf of bread and murders were not common in those days. Jack devastatingly murdered Polly. He slashed her thro@t and mutilated her abdomen. Now this was not it. Just a week later, on Sept 8, another lady’s body was discovered in the rear yard of Hanbury Street which was close to where Polly was killed. Her name was Annie

Chapman who was lying on her back when she was found and she was 47 years old, the oldest of all his victims. According to the police report, she didn’t had any income source hence she was working as a se# worker and that night again she was looking for a client when she met Jack. They then go to a passageway where Jack the Ripper killed Annie. According to the neighbour, at 5:30 am when he was going to his restroom in his flat, he heard a lady’s voice saying no and a thud against the fence which he believes was Annie’s body hitting the fence.

Jack the Ripper, c&&t Annie’s thr0at from left to right back to the spinal column and r!pped her body up to the breastb0ne and took her intestines out and placed it on her shoulder and even took everything out from her pocket and placed it systematically at her feet. After witnessing the scene, everyone including the officials was shocked by the nature of the killing.

While these incidents happened, a leather apron was common in both incidents hence police were searching for a man who wore a leather apron and lives in Whitechapel. Mistakenly, a man named John Pizer who was a cobbler who wore a leather apron for his work residing in Whitechapel was arrested and was interrogated. Later the police understood that the leather apron had nothing to the with the crime and were then released.

At this point, the police recognize that something is missing in the case and a man is roaming free killing people in monstrous ways.
On the 27th of September, the Central New Agency received a letter that became the headline of the town within minutes. The letter was signed by Jack the Ripper boasting about his killings and stating that police wouldn’t be able to catch him soon.
Later, it was discovered in the investigation that the letter was written by a person from the Central News press itself to generate TRP for his channel.

In the same month on 30th Sept, Jack the Ripper killed two more women on the same night named Elizabeth Stride and Catherine Eddowes. This night was documented as ‘Double Event Night’.

Elizabeth was earlier working as a cleaning maid but to raise her living and provide a better life for his children, she started working as a pr0stitute and her body was dead where a river of blood was flowing through her throat to a gutter on the opposite side of the street but unlike other victims, she only had a cut in the thr0at and there were no mutilations.

Now most people believed that Jack was annoyed by the noise of the cart she was pushing hence he ended up just cutting her thr0at which left him unsatisfied so he went looking for another victim. From the time of Elizabeth’s body’s discovery, 45 minutes later, Catherine’s body was found when she was 46 years old.

Now her killing is the most horrifying one out of all the killings he did till that day. Her thr0at was cut open, the alphabet ‘V’ was cut into her c#eeks and eyelids, part of her eyeb@lls had been taken out, the tip of her n0se had been cut and also he cut out her uterus and left kidney. What’s more, shocking was in the nearby a policeman residing with his family, and also there was a watchman nearby but no one saw or heard anything suspicious. When her body was taken to the mortuary and undressed, it was found that even a part of her body was missing. Later, Mr Lusk received a letter with a portion of the kidney stating that he had eaten the remaining part of the kidney and sent the rest for him.

This letter spread a chilling horror in the city. Upon medical reports, it was confirmed that the sent portion of the kidney actually matched with Catherine’s DNA. Some believed that it was the only true letter written by Jack the Ripper while others disagree believing that it might be the work of some medical student who could get access to her body. In October 1888, police even performed a house-to-house search to find the criminal but due to lack of techniques and equipment in those days, it was not easy to get more clues about the cases. However due to the increased presence of the police in those areas, no killing happened in October.

And then on November 9, 1888, another woman named Kelly was found dead in her own room. She was in her mid-20s, the youngest of all the victims. Just like other ladies, to raise money she used to work at night but for that, she had a room of her own. Now having a closed environment gave Jack more freedom to do whatever he liked to do with the dead body. He cut her face off, removed her breasts, placed her organs around the room, sliced flesh from her thighs making her thigh bones exposed, cut out her heart, and left her lying on the bed. Sadly, her heart was never found by the police.

Was He Ever Caught?

Jack used to spot the potholes so he could get down the road using those potholes right after committing the crime and then uses the Whitechapel main road which was located in the heart of the city to get mixed in the crowd and get away easily. Despite the several efforts made by the police, no conclusive evidence was found which could identify Jack the Ripper.

As “Unsolved Mysteries Volume 4” explores this infamous case which deep dives into the case of Jack the Ripper, delivers a bone-chilling experience and sets as a reminder of the darkness that one can imagine in a society. His story deals with unimaginable brutality and the struggles of police and locals to find him.

Jack the Ripper may never be definitively identified as there is no confirmation of his identity to date, but his story will continue to fascinate and horrify future generations.
