The Frog Episode 1 Netflix : A Korean limited series streaming now on Netflix, ‘The Frog’ follows the everyday mundane life of Jeon Yeoung-ha, the owner of a vacation home in the picturesque countryside. However, the banal nothingness of his life soon takes a turn for the worse when a suspicious house guest triggers a series of unfortunate events for him and others around him.
The Frog Episode 1 begins with an unsettling cold open of a forest while the narrator remarks on the popular philosophical proverb of a tree falling in the forest, and no one hearing it, foreboding what’s in store for the viewers ahead. The montage shows a series of violent acts and coverups before the title card rolls.
The Frog Episode 1 Recap
Opening from where the cold open left us, Jeon Yeoung-ha takes his dirty laundry to the laundromat where he and his friend discuss his sighting of a wild boar in the mountains. With the vacation home so close to the area, his friend and the owner of the laundromat advise him to take precautions and be safe. Later at the house, while Jeon cleans the pool, his friend prescribes making a website for the house to ensure more guests, but he thinks it unsafe to accept any while a wild boar is out on the loose.
The scene cuts to an old lady watching a girls’ football game, whom we later come to know has a high position in the police. She enters an empty police station and is mistaken for a citizen by one of the lousy juniors. But the box with all her stuff shows a picture titled ‘July 2001, My First Case’. The next scene takes us to Lake View Motel, whose owner, Gu Sang-ju sits down to have lunch with a friend while the latter’s mother admonishes him for serving cold food to a hardworking man.
Back at the motel, a group of guests leave and compliment him for his service. After calling them a cab and bidding them farewell, he starts cleaning the room, getting it ready for the next guest.

After helping them out, he gets his laundry, as well as his friend’s, in order to give it to him. At his friends’s house, he finds the same woman, namely Yoo Seong-a and her child, who then become guests at their vacation home. He strikes up a friendship with the child, fixing his toy and filling the pool with water for him to play in. Meanwhile, the mother, a suspicious character, goes out to buy groceries and toys for the home.
When she returns, she wishes to play music on the record player, for which they go into the store room to pick out a vinyl out of Jeon’s dead wife’s collection. She chooses ‘Dreamer’ by Bobby Bland and plays it while it rains outside. The rains disrupt the child’s plans of playing, and he too returns inside.
The rain brings another dubious guest into the town who gets stranded as his car runs low on fuel. Gu Sang-ju spots him, brings him inside and offers him a suite for free in room 403. Back at the vacation home, Jeon and his friend enjoy dinner and drinks and talk about their children getting married. We get to know that Jeon’s daughter is coming home in a week accompanied by a man.
Gu Sang-ju, who fell asleep at the reception is told to take a break by his wife, and he returns to his friends’s for hot ramen. This is when they spot a line of police cars racing in the direction of his motel due to the call made by his wife to the newbie at the police station. He elbows through a mob of reporters and runs to the motel where he finds several police officers inspecting the crime scene.
