Gi Ho In The Frog Character Explained: ‘The Frog’ is a Korean psychological thriller created by proclaimed writer Son Ho-young and director Mo Wan-il. With its primary producers being Studio Lululala and Studio Flow, the mini-series was released on August 23, 2024, and is currently popularly streaming on Netflix worldwide.
One of the major characters in the show, Gi-ho is someone whose character arc changes drastically as time goes on. In the first few episodes, we see a shy and timid little 13-year-old boy, greatly impacted by the tragic events unfolding in his parents’ life. The son of the Lake View Motel owners Gu Sang-jun and Eun-gyeong, Gi-ho is the one who encounters the maniacal serial killer live in action as the latter brings a dead woman up the stairs into his room.
Being a prime witness to the accident brings about a major setback to his growing years in terms of trauma. He is bullied at school as the boys call his motel a ‘murder motel’ and is coerced into bringing them alcohol and cigarettes from his mother’s refrigerator. This is put to a stop when one kid overdoses on the substances, and Gi-ho too, passes out from the intake of sleeping pills.

He is then sent away to his aunt while his parents deal with the situation at hand. While he has gone, more tragedy befalls their family as his mother commits suicide, and his father is unable to move on from the shock.
In the latter half of the show, we see a grown-up Gi-ho driven by wrath and vindication for the murderer who ruined his family’s life. Along with his uncle Jong-du, he forges a plan to kill the serial killer when he comes to visit his dying mother in the hospital. Well-versed in arms and ammunition by now, he ideates in great detail as to how he would shoot the murderer on D-day. While he fails in his original plot, he manages to kill the murderer and flee the police. He also encounters Jeon Young-ha, who, stricken by a similar predicament, offers to be his alibi for the murder.

Even Chief Detective Yoon Bo-min covers up for him when his gun is found in the hands of Yoo Seong-a’s ex-husband. In an attempt to escape indictment, he tries to shoot himself but is saved by Jeon Young-a at the final moment. With nothing left to live for, he is made to speak with his father, an elderly Gu Sang-jun, who reminds him of when he was a little boy and promises to look out for him. An emotional Gi-ho decides to live on, however alone and lonesome, until he finds a father-like figure in Jeon Young-ha, who invites him to visit the vacation home whenever he pleases.
Korean pop sensation and member of the world-renowned band EXO, Park Chan-yeol is a singer-songwriter turned actor. Apart from his pop hits, he has also starred in numerous films and TV series including ‘So I Married an Anti-Fan’ (2016), ‘Memories of Alhambra’ (2018), ‘And the Box’ (2021), and now reprises his role as one of the protagonists in ‘The Frog’.
