The Frog Episode 4 Recap and Explained

The Frog Episode 4 Recap Netflix: Episode 4 begins with Gu Sang-jun visiting the serial killer in jail in order to receive some closure for his wife’s tragic death. His train of thought goes back to the happier times when he and his wife bought the motel. We come to know that Eun-gyeong’s death was a suicide, not an accident, as she writes a suicide note for her family explaining her reasons.

Gu Sang-jun asks the killer why it had to be his life that was messed up, and the latter reminds him that it was he who came to him and not the inverse. Gu Sang-jun, who came with Yoon Bo-Min, thanks her for her help and advises her never to be the helpless frog who, once hit by a stone can only wonder who did that to him.

This advice is perhaps where the show gets its title from, as both the subplots deal with a similar situation at hand. Afterwards, Yoon is confronted by her senior for having a keen interest in violent crimes and says she has ‘it’ i.e. the strength needed for the game. This reminds us of the time when the two junior officers discussed the transfer of an old Yoon into town.

The Frog Episode 4 Recap

In Jeon’s life, he is concerned about his daughter’s well-being and drives down to Seoul to check on her. He also meets his friend in the hospital, and instead of warning him about Yoo, he lies about her having left some valuables back at the vacation home. He lies to him so as to not risk his life, as he envisions Yoo bashing his head in with a fire extinguisher.

Episode 1 Recap: The Frog Episode 1 Explained

Back at the villa, Yoo manages to change the decor and layout of the place, hinting at not leaving anytime soon and being a permanent guest. She paints the walls, buys plants and changes all of Jeon’s wife’s designs to match her style. One morning, a furious Jeon even attempts to drown her in the pool when he sees movers and packers taking away his wife’s additions to the house. But due to some peculiar, supernatural reason, Yoo comes back to life, once again blurring the lines between phantasmagoria and reality.

Yoo also visits the laundromat Jeon often frequents, and strikes up a friendship with the owner. She clicks a few pictures, claiming how the style is inspiring for her art.  The scene cuts to Jeon’s daughter and her partner, disclosing her pregnancy, and wishing to move closer to her father, foreshadowing the violence Yoo might inflict on her.

Jeon continues to grow suspicious of Yoo, and one day manages to sneak out her laptop to uncover her true identity. However, the laptop is locked and trying to hack his way into it could lead to permanent data erasure. Yoo suggests asking questions if he wants to know more, and the two sit down to eat dinner. Doubtful at first, Jeon lets Yoo finish her food before taking a bite himself.

He accuses her of killing her child, and she flips the blame onto him, as he too kept quiet about whatever was happening and did not inform the authorities. She further teases him for not having enough proof to indict her. She also expresses her desire to buy the vacation home, which Jeon humbly denies. Instead, she suggests visiting once a year, to continue to play with Jeon’s head.

However, the next morning Yoo spots an empty box of a microphone, which Jeon used the night before to gather evidence. Jeon now possesses an open declaration of Yoo admitting to killing her child and drives towards the police station to submit it. But, the viewer is met with yet another jumpscare when Yoo deliberately crashes into Jeon’s car as he is on his way to the authorities, to prevent him from uncovering her truth.

In the penultimate scene, we see a man, fuming with anger, ripping of Yoo’s name from her art at a gallery. The addition of this new character further intrigues the audience and builds suspense. Another moment that escalates the level of tension is Gi-ho, the son of Gu Sang-jun and Eun-gyeong, sitting face-to-face with the serial killer, the man responsible for all the tragedy that is unfolding in his family.

Halfway into the show, many questions are resolved, but many remain unanswered…
